What a tax invoice must show
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists what a tax invoice must contain. The form above maps to it like this:
| Rule 46 item | Where it goes in the form |
|---|---|
| Supplier name, address and GSTIN | From (your business). The GSTIN format is checked and your state is filled in from its first two digits. |
| Serial number, unique for the financial year, at most 16 characters (letters, numbers, "-" and "/") | Number. A suggestion such as INV/2026-27/001 is offered and checked. |
| Date of issue | Date |
| Recipient name, address and GSTIN if registered | Bill to |
| For an unregistered recipient with a taxable value of ₹50,000 or more: name, address, delivery address, and state name and code | Bill to and Ship to. The PDF is blocked until these are filled in. |
| HSN code of goods or accounting code of services | HSN/SAC on each item (a warning if empty) |
| Description, quantity and unit, total value, taxable value after discount | Items and Totals |
| Rate and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST | GST rate on each item; amounts in the totals and tax summary |
| Place of supply with state name, for inter-State supplies | Place of supply |
| Whether tax is payable on reverse charge | Reverse charge (printed as "Tax payable on reverse charge: No/Yes") |
| Signature or digital signature of the supplier | Signature (image or typed text) |
CGST + SGST or IGST?
When your state (from your GSTIN) is the same as the place of supply, the supply is intra-State: half the rate is charged as CGST and half as SGST. When they differ, it is inter-State and the full rate is charged as IGST. The tool decides this from the two state codes and shows which one applies under the totals.
In the Union territories without a legislature (Chandigarh; Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu; Lakshadweep; Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Ladakh; and "Other Territory"), UTGST is charged instead of SGST, and the invoice labels it UTGST. Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir use SGST.
Rates and HSN digits
GST rates were restructured with effect from 22 September 2025, so the presets are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with "Other" for any rate that still applies to your item. The tool never suggests a rate for an item; pick the one that applies and check the official notification.
For HSN codes, businesses with an aggregate turnover of up to ₹5 crore generally use 4 digits and those above ₹5 crore use 6 digits (Notification 78/2020-Central Tax). Ask your CA if you're unsure which applies to you.
E-invoicing
If your aggregate turnover in any earlier financial year was above ₹5 crore, you must issue e-invoices through the Invoice Registration Portal (Notification 10/2023-Central Tax, from 1 August 2023). This tool does not create e-invoices, IRNs or QR codes, and it does not file returns.
Questions
Does it check that a GSTIN is real?
It checks the format, the state code and the check character. It cannot tell whether a GSTIN is registered or active; use the GST portal for that.
Can I make an export invoice in foreign currency?
Not in GST mode yet: GST invoices here are in rupees. Export invoices with LUT or IGST endorsements are planned.
